- This is a part-time (0.95 EFT), Fixed Term (2 year - until 30.06.2028) Trainee Clinical Perfusionist position at 72 hours per fortnight within the Cardiac Surgery (Perfusion) Department
About the role
As a Trainee, you will acquire the skills necessary to provide for the management of patients undergoing medical procedures which support the heart and lungs. Primarily you will be responsible for operation of the heart lung machine (under the supervision of qualified Perfusionists).
Take on the vital role of training in the setup and functionality of the heart-lung bypass machine, along with managing patients on related equipment, during cardiothoracic surgeries and within intensive care settings. Become trained in perfusion expertise across a diverse range of surgical procedures, encompassing minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Collaborate seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the delivery of advanced ECMO care at a heightened level, including VA, VV, and eCPR modalities, as an integral part of a comprehensive state-wide ECMO service. Contribute to the expansion of a thriving cardiac surgical unit as it continues to grow and evolve.
Classification for this position will be Medical Scientist, Clinical Perfusionist, Grade 1 Yr. 1.
About Cardiothoracic Unit
The Cardiothoracic Unit performs a wide range of complex cardiothoracic surgical procedures including bypass grafts, valve repair/replacement, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and aortic procedures. University Hospital Geelong is a Tier 2 ECMO service, managing VA, VV and eCPR patients. The Perfusion Unit uses 2 state-of-the-art Liva Nova Essenz Heart Lung Machines.
Key responsibilities
- Trainees must enrol in The Master of Cardiovascular Perfusion at Monash University and begin study in the July 2026 academic period (details of the Masters course can be found at: Cardiovascular Perfusion - M6050 - Study at Monash)
- Applicants must have the ability to balance full time Masters level study with supervised clinical training concurrently
- Provide safe and effective extracorporeal circulation and cardiopulmonary support services under supervision, including administration of prescribed agents, monitoring equipment, and supporting cardiac surgery procedures.
- Participate in pre-operative assessment and patient workup, contribute to urgent and after-hours perfusion coverage, and maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with organisational and legislative requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Standards, Barwon Health policies, information management requirements, and occupational health and safety procedures, including incident reporting, clinical audits, and risk management activities.
- Undertake postgraduate perfusion studies and preparation for ANZBP certification examinations while actively participating in continuing education, research, clinical review activities, and service improvement initiatives.
- Participate in a 24-hour on-call perfusion roster
What we’re looking for
- Australian bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in relevant area of study (see below)with a Weighted Average Mark of 60
- Relevant degrees are: Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Biological Science, Clinical Science, Health Science, Paramedicine- area of study must include anatomy AND physiology AND physics AND chemistry
- Meet all entry requirements of Monash University’s Masters of Perfusion: Cardiovascular Perfusion - M6050 - Study at Monash
- Has ability to balance full-time Masters- level study with supervised clinical training
- Strong organisational skills, self-discipline, and ability to manage competing demands
- Demonstrates professional maturity
