About the Role
The Grade 2 Registered Nurse provides high-quality, evidence-based health care to young people detained at Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct. You will deliver comprehensive primary health services within a multidisciplinary team, supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of young people in custody.
This role includes health assessment, care planning, medication administration, and ongoing monitoring of health status, as well as supporting early intervention, health promotion, and discharge planning back into community services. You will also respond to emergencies and contribute to a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-focused environment.
Working within a purpose-built 24/7 health service, you will collaborate closely with Youth Justice staff and a broad clinical team including mental health, allied health, general practice, and specialist services.
Key responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive primary health assessments, care planning, and ongoing clinical reviews for young people in custody
- Administer medications and deliver treatment for acute and chronic health conditions, injuries, and illness
- Respond to clinical emergencies and support escalation of care when required
- Undertake health education, early intervention, prevention, and health promotion activities
- Contribute to discharge planning, including mental health and risk assessments and referral to community services
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and participate in effective handover processes
- Work collaboratively with Youth Justice and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated care
What we’re looking for
- Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse
- Ability to work effectively in a complex, custodial or high-pressure clinical environment
- Strong clinical assessment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and ability to engage with young people in a therapeutic and trauma-informed way
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to evidence-based practice, safety, and continuous improvement
- Genuine interest in youth health, rehabilitation, and improving outcomes for young people
About Cherry Creek Primary Health Service:
Barwon Health is partnered with the Department of Justice and Community Safety to provide the health care service at the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre. Cherry Creek is a 140 bed Youth Justice Facility to the west of Werribee in the vicinity of Cherry Creek that accommodates males between 15-17 years of age, both sentenced and on remand.
The services delivered include emergency response (with support from the Barwon Health Virtual ED), primary care beds, integrated mental health, drug and alcohol services, allied health, general practice and specialist medical care as required. There is 24/7 nursing coverage on-site as well as a 7-days a week primary care clinic. Diagnostic (pathology and imaging) and pharmacy is also be available on site.
The health care is integrated in the operations of the Centre and is primarily operating from a state of the art purpose built health facility.
