About the role
As the Grade 1 Radiographer/MIT you will provide support to the Grade 2 Radiographer / MIT and their colleagues in the provision of the medical imaging service 24/7 across all Barwon Medical Imaging sites.

Barwon Medical Imaging provides a 24/7 comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services at the University Hospital Geelong, Barwon Health North, The Mckellar Centre, and Colac Area Health. Examinations include adult and paediatric emergency department patients, trauma/resus/stroke, inpatient and outpatient imaging. Our services are provided utilising Digital X-ray, OPG, 3rd generation Dual Energy and Spectral CT scanners, MRI, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, Angiography (Including a new Hybrid Angio CT Interventional suite), newly installed Mammography machine, and Nuclear Medicine. These services are performed by a team of highly skilled and dedicated radiographers, sonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, radiologists, nurses and support staff who ensure that all patients have access to quality safe medical imaging services.
Key responsibilities
- Undertake Grade 1 Radiographer/MIT duties including being available for reasonable overtime, and working shifts that do not attract the night shift or on-call allowance as part of the 24/7 ‘ABC roster’
- Independently operate diagnostic imaging equipment X-ray, Mobile X-ray, Theatre Image Intensifier, and Fluoroscopic screening. Independently utilise information communication systems including RIS/PACS.
- Produce high quality medical images using valid request forms following the principles of ALARA.
- Correct identification of patients using 4 step model consisting of: (i) verification of patient information, (ii) matching information against request form, (iii) timeout, (iv) post procedure confirmation of an acceptable image including correct positioning and presentation (side markers, orientation).
- Escalating faults or issues with X-ray and mobile X-ray units to the Grade 3 or 4 X-ray supervisor, Chief Radiographer.
- Works with other medical imaging staff including medical imaging students.
- Undergo training within other medical imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, Digital Subtraction Angiography or Mammography as they become more experienced in the medical imaging field.
- Provide high quality safe care to consumers and implement the Barwon Health values in daily duties.
What we’re looking for
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Medical Radiation Practitioner
- Hold a valid Victorian Government, Department of Health Radiation ‘Use License’ to operate medical imaging equipment
- Tertiary qualification recognised by the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT)
- Ability to work independently, triaging imaging examinations and maintaining throughput of medical imaging exams.
- Producing high quality medical imaging in a safe manner adhering to ALARA.
- Demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, experience and competency in all routine, trauma and paediatric medical imaging examinations including X-ray, mobile X-ray, theatre image intensifier, fluoroscopy.
