About the role

As a Registered Nurse, Student Midwife, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, consumer-centred care within Barwon Health’s Maternity Services while developing your midwifery knowledge and skills.

Working collaboratively with women, families and the multidisciplinary team, you will support care across either the Birth Suite or the Antenatal/Postnatal Ward. You will establish therapeutic relationships with patients, contribute to assessment and care planning, and provide evidence-based care that supports positive outcomes and continuity of care.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide safe, high-quality and consumer-centred care to women and families within Maternity Services.
  • Work collaboratively with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team to assess needs, develop care plans and evaluate outcomes.
  • Support the delivery of care within the Birth Suite or Antenatal/Postnatal Ward while developing midwifery knowledge and skills.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships and effective communication to support continuity of care.
  • Apply evidence-based practice and contribute to quality improvement, service redesign and audit activities.
  • Maintain professional competence through ongoing education, clinical development and compliance with relevant nursing and midwifery standards.

 

What we’re looking for    

  • Recency in acute nursing practice
  • A graduate year and at least one year post the graduate year
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to remain calm under pressure   
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills   
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice   

    

What the Program Offers    

  • 18 months: 48 hrs per fortnight, temporary part time commencing February 2027  
  • In affiliation with Deakin University 
  • Eligible nurses and midwives are entitled to examination leave and study leave under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) Enterprise Agreement.
  • Rotations through the Post-Natal Unit, Birth Suite, Antenatal Clinics and Special Care Nursery
  • Education and clinical support provided by the dedicated Midwifery education team.

  • Opportunities to develop skills in providing woman-centred care that promotes respectful and inclusive maternity services

 Continued employment in this postgraduate midwifery position is contingent upon the successful completion of all local clinical requirements and academic requirements associated with the affiliated University   

 

About the service    

Barwon Health provides pregnancy, intrapartum and postnatal care for both high and low risk pregnancies. The number of births per annum is approximately 3000. Antenatal care is provided in both hospital and community sites. We have a Maternity Assessment Unit adjacent to the Birth Unit. The Birth Unit has 8 birth rooms, and the Maternity Ward has 24 beds, a Postnatal Care in the home service and a Lactation service.  

The Special Care Nursery at University Hospital Geelong is a level five neonatal unit serving the Barwon Southwest region. Equipped to care for up to 20 infants simultaneously, the nursery features two dedicated resuscitation rooms. We provide comprehensive care for neonates from 31 weeks gestation, admitting babies from various sources including the birthing suite, postnatal ward, operating theatre, home, emergency department, and through transfers from other healthcare facilities.   

Barwon Health is also excited to announce the development of a new Women’s and Children’s Tower, a significant addition that will enhance our paediatric, maternity, and neonatal services. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to accommodate future growth and expand our capacity, ensuring that families in Geelong and the surrounding communities receive the highest standard of care right in their local area. The new tower will provide advanced, specialised services for women and children, reinforcing our commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare close to home.
