About the role

The role of the emergency nurse is diverse and dynamic, providing consumer-centred, evidence-based care to patients presenting with a broad range of acute health needs. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, emergency nurses use clinical assessment, problem-solving and organisational skills to provide safe and effective patient care. 

Emergency nurses play an integral role in establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, communicating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and contributing to the ongoing assessment and management of patients throughout their Emergency Department journey. 

 

Key responsibilities

  • Provide safe, high-quality and consumer-centred nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Undertake clinical assessment, prioritisation and ongoing management of patients with a broad range of acute health needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, communicating effectively and compassionately throughout their Emergency Department journey.
  • Apply evidence-based practice and contribute to a culture of safety, quality improvement and ongoing professional development.

 

What we're looking for 

  • Registered Nurse with minimum of 12 months emergency nursing experience  
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to remain calm under pressure 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice  

 

What the Program Offers 

  • A structured 12-month program, 64 hours per fortnight, temporary part time commencing January 2027 
  • Rotations through the Adult and Children’s Emergency Departments 
  • Dedicated clinical support and guidance from Clinical Support Nurses & Educators with onsite assessment of clinical competencies and hurdles
  • Development of advanced clinical knowledge and skills required to care for patients with complex and critical presentations 
  • Opportunities to develop greater autonomy and confidence in emergency nursing practice
  • Under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) Enterprise Agreement, eligible nurses and midwives are entitled to examination leave and study leave  

Continued employment in this postgraduate nursing position is contingent upon the successful completion of all local clinical requirements and academic requirements associated with the affiliated University

Barwon Health ED is one of the largest regional health services in Victoria, providing care for approximately 80,000 emergency presentations per year. Under Barwon Health’s emergency model of care patients are streamed to dedicated assessment areas including fast track, adult, paediatric, resuscitation, trauma and mental health areas. Our mission is to improve access and patient flow to provide a sustainable service that ensures high quality, safe, people focused care. The emergency department also has short stay units to ensure consumers receive the right care, at the right place at the right time.
