About the role
The Barwon Health Drugs and Alcohol Services (DAS) Pharmacotherapy Clinic sees more than 650 patients each year in central Geelong with 150 patients receiving their long-acting injectable buprenorphine from our depot clinic. DAS provides primary AOD counselling and integrated MH and AOD support to more than 700 consumers each year and has an award-winning harm reduction service.
The purpose of the Pharmacotherapy General Practitioner (GP) role is to provide direct patient care and expert medical advice in the provision of medication assisted treatment of opioid dependence (MATOD) within the Barwon region. Employed by the Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS), the role has direct access to support from the DAS MATOD practice nurse, addiction psychiatrist and registrar and the wider DAS team. It is intended that the role would be based in one or more of the Barwon Health community health sites, which would be agreed based on patient demand and the employee’s geographical location.
This role has been developed for the purpose of facilitating expanded access to pharmacotherapy in regional and rural areas. The GP would also have access to monthly meeting with other pharmacotherapy GPs.

Key Responsibilities
- Supervision of addiction medicine trainees and development of training pathway
- Review patients with addiction concern presenting via the local
- Liaison and consultation work on addiction medicine cases across MHDAS
What We Are Looking For
- A vocationally registered GP with demonstrated interest or experience in addiction medicine and pharmacotherapy (MATOD)
- Strong capability in delivering patient-centred care for complex presentations, including co-occurring mental health and substance use needs
- Experience working with pharmacotherapy (MATOD) and/or within regional or rural service settings is desirable
