About the role
University Hospital Geelong ICU is a C24 CICM-accredited, 24-bed Level 3 adult ICU providing comprehensive medical, surgical and cardiothoracic care to the Greater Geelong and South West Victoria region. With over 1,600 admissions annually, we are recognised for delivering complex, high-quality patient care in a supportive and collaborative environment.
As an ICU Registrar, you will join a diverse and dynamic trainee cohort including CICM, FANZCA, FACEM, FRACP and surgical trainees. You will gain broad exposure to critical care medicine while being supported by experienced senior clinicians.
We are committed to delivering a high-quality, structured training program:
- Protected weekly teaching led by Consultants
- Comprehensive education covering:
- Core ICU topics
- CICM Part 1 & 2 exam preparation
- Multidisciplinary simulation training at the Deakin University ReVISE Simulation Centre
- Regular academic activities:
- Weekly Morbidity & Mortality meetings
- Monthly Safety & Quality and Journal Club sessions
- Monthly echocardiography teaching (TTE & TOE)
Our ICU has a well-established research program, with active participation in national and international trials, and strong support for CICM trainees completing formal research projects.
Specialised Clinical Exposure
- AP6-accredited unit with over 100 paediatric cases annually and strong links with a state C24 PICU
- Tier 2 ECMO service in collaboration with the Victorian ECMO Service:

- Exposure to VA and VV ECMO and ECPR
- Training in ECMO initiation, management, and weaning
- Participation in ECMO simulation and education programs
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver safe, effective care to critically ill adult and paediatric patients in ICU and across wards, ED, and theatre
- Assess, initiate treatment, and provide resuscitation appropriate to experience level
- Perform clinical procedures safely in line with protocols and supervision requirements
- Conduct ward rounds each shift and maintain thorough, up-to-date knowledge of all patients
- Escalate clinical concerns promptly and liaise early with intensivists (including paediatric, ECMO, and unstable cases)
- Communicate clearly and timely with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, including during clinical changes and handovers
- Respond to MET/Code Blue calls, provide advanced life support, and support outreach services and acutely unwell patients hospital-wide
- Supervise junior staff, maintain accurate medical records, participate in education/quality activities, and uphold professional and ethical standards
What we’re looking for
- MBBS (or equivalent), including AMC certification if internationally trained; AHPRA registration or eligibility
- Minimum 3 years postgraduate experience, including at least 6 months in acute care
- Current or prospective trainee in FCICM, FANZCA, or FACEM
- Certifications: ACLS, APLS, and ICU BASIC course completion is desirable
- Willingness for after-hours/on-call duties, with strong professionalism, integrity, and reliability
