About the Role

University Hospital Geelong ICU is a 24-bed Level 3, C24 CICM-accredited unit and the largest regional ICU in Victoria, managing over 1600 admissions annually and delivering high-acuity adult, cardiothoracic and paediatric care; the Transition Year (TY) position is designed to support progression to ICU specialist practice, offering a structured blend of senior registrar and junior consultant responsibilities under graded supervision, including semi-autonomous clinical care, leadership of multidisciplinary ward rounds, supervision of junior staff, and participation in after-hours decision-making, alongside dedicated non-clinical time to develop leadership, education and advanced echocardiography skills, with strong exposure to ECMO (Tier 2 VECMOS site) and access to a highly supportive training environment focused on career progression, feedback, research, education and high-quality patient-centred care.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver senior-level clinical care to critically ill adult and paediatric patients across ICU, ED, wards and retrieval referrals
  • Provide semi-autonomous patient management with appropriate escalation to intensivists
  • Lead multidisciplinary ward rounds and coordinate patient care planning
  • Supervise and support registrars and junior medical staff
  • Perform advanced procedures, resuscitation and clinical decision-making
  • Coordinate ICU flow and resource management with senior staff
  • Participate in after-hours/on-call roster with increasing autonomy
  • Contribute to education programs, echocardiography training, audits and research
  • Engage in leadership, quality improvement and departmental initiatives

 

What We’re Looking For

  • CICM Phase 3 trainee with Second Part exam completed
  • Completion of ICU and anaesthesia training requirements
  • Demonstrated competency in echocardiography and airway management
  • Eligible for AHPRA registration
  • ACLS/APLS certified
  • Strong clinical judgement, leadership and teamwork skills
  • Excellent communication and professionalism
  • Commitment to education, quality improvement and ongoing development
