About the role

University Hospital Geelong ICU is a 24-bed Level 3, C24 CICM-accredited unit and the largest regional ICU in Victoria, managing over 1600 admissions annually and providing high-quality care across adult, cardiothoracic and paediatric patients; as a Senior Registrar, you will play a key leadership role in delivering comprehensive clinical care, leading ward rounds with specialist support, supervising and teaching junior staff, and contributing to ICU operations, while gaining exposure to a well-established ECMO service (including VA, VV and ECMO-CPR) and participating in education, research, and quality improvement activities within a highly supportive, collaborative environment designed to foster advanced training progression and professional development.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver advanced clinical care to critically ill adult & paediatric patients
  • Perform assessment, resuscitation, procedures, and treatment planning
  • Lead daily ward rounds under intensivist supervision
  • Coordinate patient flow and ICU operations with medical and nursing teams
  • Review and manage patients in ED, wards, and theatres as required
  • Escalate complex cases (e.g. ECMO, paediatrics, unstable patients) appropriately
  • Provide clear communication with families, carers, and referring teams
  • Attend MET/Code Blue calls and deliver advanced life support
  • Supervise and teach junior medical staff and students
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation
  • Participate in after-hours/on-call roster with increasing autonomy and off-site first on call component
  • Contribute to:
    • Education programs (CICM prep, journal club, echo training)
    • Quality improvement, audits, and research
 

 What were looking for

  • Advanced CICM trainee (Part 1 exam completed)
  • Minimum 2 years ICU + 12 months anaesthetics training
  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) + AMC (if applicable)
  • Eligible for AHPRA registration
  • ACLS/APLS certification and airway training
  • Strong:
    • Clinical decision-making skills
    • Leadership & teamwork
    • Communication skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and ethical practice
