About the role

The HMO3+ role offers diverse training through rotations across multiple units. You’ll rotate through various clinical units, gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic regional setting, with strong support and supervision from both junior and senior medical staff.

The HMO3 Stream provides tailored training opportunities for those early-career trainees, including those interested in pursuing careers in Surgery, Medicine, General Practice, or Obstetrics and Gynaecology (with options for a Certificate or Diploma in O&G). ED rotations offer pathways to the Barwon Health HMO Critical Care year and can be done to fulfill the paediatric component of GP training.

Within our HMO3 general year, trainees can complete 6-month RACGP Rural ‘Extended skills training’ (EST) placements in ED and Community Psychiatry and you may also be eligible to apply for RPLE in the General Practice or Rural Generalist training programs.  The Diploma of Obstetrics, which also qualifies for EST needs to be applied for separately.

Residents in the HMO3 role complete 4 x 3-month terms; one term is allocated for cover and includes annual leave (5 weeks). Other available rotations include Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical (Gen Med & Specialties), Geriatrics, Rehabilitation, Psychiatry (Community or Inpatient), Surgery (General, Subspecialty), and ICU at St John of God Private Hospital. As part of our HMO3 year we have regional rotations (Colac and Hamilton), which trainees will rotate to for one term.

Located next to Deakin University Clinical School, you’ll have opportunities to supervise and teach students both in the ward and classroom. The Medical Education Special Interest group offers the “Near Peer Teaching Program,” along with Teaching on The Run courses and simulation teaching mentorship.

If you have the qualifications, interpersonal skills, and commitment to improving patient care, this role may be for you!
