About the Role
Applications are invited for the position of Fellow in General Surgery – 2027. This role is suited to senior surgical trainees who have obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or an equivalent specialist qualification.
This 12-month fellowship offers a comprehensive and high-volume surgical experience within a large regional teaching hospital environment. Barwon Health has 19 Consultant General Surgeons across four surgical units, with subspecialty expertise in colorectal, upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary, breast and endocrine, and acute general surgery.
The service performs over 2,500 elective and 3,800 emergency procedures annually, alongside a broad endoscopy program. Fellows will be based at University Hospital Geelong and Epworth Private Hospital Waurn Ponds and will participate in an on-call roster with a strong focus on emergency surgery.
Barwon Health appoints approximately 4.5 General Surgery Fellows each year. As a Fellow, you will work within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the supervision and development of junior medical staff ranging from interns to accredited surgical trainees.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day clinical management of surgical units, including inpatient care and referrals
- Participate in operating theatre sessions, outpatient clinics, and endoscopy services
- Attend promptly to urgent and emergency clinical presentations
- Organise patient admissions and ensure appropriate management plans are in place
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and their families, including obtaining informed consent
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Liaise effectively with Consultant Surgeons regarding patient care, including structured handover
- Supervise and support junior medical staff, including registrars and interns
- Contribute to after-hours, on-call, and recall rosters
- Assist in surgical education, training, and unit administration
- Prioritise and manage multiple patients according to clinical urgency
- Participate in continuing medical education and quality improvement activities
What we’re looking for
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent specialist qualification
- Eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia (AHPRA)
- Significant postgraduate experience in General Surgery or a comparable clinical environment
- A demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in General Surgery, with a subspecialty interest
- Strong clinical decision-making and organisational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
- Proven leadership capability and a commitment to supporting junior staff
- Willingness to participate in on-call and after-hours rosters
