About the Department of General Surgery
Applications are invited for the role of Fellow in General Surgery - 2026, from suitably qualified senior surgical trainees who have obtained Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent specialist qualification. This is a 12 month position, commencing February 2025.
We have 19 Consultant General Surgeons across four surgical units, with subspecialty interest in colorectal, upper GI and hepatobiliary, breast and endocrine, and acute general surgery. We undertake over 2,500 elective and 3,800 emergency procedures each year, as well as providing a broad endoscopy service. As a large regional teaching hospital, you will be working in a team with multiple junior medical staff at all levels of training, from interns through to accredited RACS trainees.
About the Role - General Surgery Fellow
Barwon Health has 4.5 General Surgery Fellows each year. The Fellows are responsible for day to day clinical management of the surgical units, including oversight of inpatients and referrals, participation in operating theatre sessions and outpatient clinics and supervision of junior medical staff, under the support and direction of the Unit Consultants. Successful applicants will need to provide leadership to junior medical staff and assist in the coordination and provision of surgical education and training, as well as general unit administration in addition to clinical duties. With a strong research culture, and multiple university ties, we also encourage and support our Fellows to pursue research opportunities whilst working with us here at Barwon Health.
The positions are based at University Hospital Geelong and Epworth Private Hospital Waurn Ponds, and all include participation in the on-call roster, with a strong focus on emergency surgery.

The successful applicants will also assist in general reporting and participate in the roster for after-hours, on-call and recall by the unit.
