About the facility
Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.
Work in an incredibly diverse team. Emergency Department Registrars may be:
- Training to be a FACEM
- Upskilling in critical care and procedural skills to work in more rural and remote settings
- Training to be a GP and keen to do some extended skills time in Emergency Medicine
- Wanting to remain a generalist and gain some more acute hospital experience
- Keen to complete the Emergency Medicine Certificate and/or Associateship programs
About the role
With the longest established Emergency Department in the state, Barwon Health prides itself on providing safe, quality healthcare to communities within Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast and throughout the entire South West region of Victoria.
The Emergency Department at University Hospital Geelong treats close to 80,000 patients per year with 30% of presentations being paediatric. With access to all major specialties except Neurosurgery and Transplant Medicine, the variety and acuity of conditions treated ensures a stimulating work environment. Our geographic location results in high exposure to trauma cases, marine and land based toxinology and medical outreach to more peripheral centres.

As an ED registrar, you have access to:
• 36 months accredited ED time as an ACEM trainee – we are a Tier 1 site and classified as Major Referral
• Accredited for Training Stage 4 in the revised ACEM training program
• A newly accredited Emergency Medicine Education Registrar position (6mths 0.5 FTE)
• 3 or 6 month rotations in:
o ICU , Anaesthetics , Paediatrics, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology
• 6 month rotation at Colac Area Health (no night shift, evenings or weekends) – classified as Non ED time
o 2 days per week in Urgent Care Centre
o 1.5 days per week of anaesthetics with GP anaesthetist
o 0.5 days per week performing safety and quality activities
o Protected time to attend weekly registrar teaching at UHG
• Optional Secondment to Alice Springs ED
• 5 hours paid and protected teaching time per week
• Annual success in primary and fellowship examinations owing to longstanding robust preparation programs
• Research opportunities to fulfil trainee research requirement or to pursue academic interest
• Allocation of a mentor
• Allocation of a supervisor for mid and end of term feedback, whether on the ACEM training program or not
• Access to EMC/EMD/EMAD programs with high completion rate owing to the organisation by our Program Support Office and easy access to supervisors
• Linked accreditation if working at either of the Private Hospitals (St John of God, Epworth Geelong) which involves access to the teaching program at University Hospital Geelong
• Participation in the roster for after-hours, on-call and recall as required by your unit.
