About the facility

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

 

 

About Central Resource Unit (CRU)

CRU manages the Acute Permanent Pool at Barwon Health that is resourced using Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives (+/- dual registration) and Endorsed Enrolled Nurses. CRU provides staffing resources twenty four hours a day, seven days a week across the clinical units of Barwon Health to cover planned and emergent shortfalls within the service.

 

 

About the role 

 

Acute Permanent Pool members have the opportunity to work across  a variety of Critical Care areas. Based on your prior experience and qualifications you will be able to choose to work in two or more of the following areas.

  • Emergency
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Coronary Care Unit / Cardiothoracic
  • Anaesthetics and PACU

 

As a Critical Care Permanent Pool staff member, you will be required to be able to work up to 50% of weekends and up to 30% night duties.

Emergency Department

With around 80,000 presentations each year, the Barwon Health Emergency Department at University Hospital Geelong plays a vital role in providing timely and effective care to people in need. To ensure that patients receive appropriate care, the department has established short stay units for both adult and paediatric patients. This approach allows the department to deliver the right care at the right time, improving patient outcomes and overall quality of care

 

Intensive Care Unit

The Barwon Health Intensive Care Unit is a 24-bed unit, providing tertiary critical care services to the Barwon South Western region. The Intensive Care Unit cares for medical, surgical, and cardiothoracic adults, as well as collaborative programs to care for adult ECMO and critically ill children. The unit also supplies a central vascular access and critical care echocardiography service to Barwon Health. The Intensive Care Unit is actively involved in clinical research, critical care education for Deakin School of Medicine, and education and training of junior doctors and nurses.

 

Cardiac Services

Bellarine Centre 5 (BC5) is a 34-bed combined Cardiac service that consists of critical care, cardiothoracic and cardiology beds. Barwon Health’s Cardiac Services covers the complete range of diagnostic and interventional Cardiology, including a 24-hour emergency STEMI Service. The Cardiothoracic Unit performs a wide range of bypass graft, valve repair/replacement and Bental’s, complex thoracic surgery including pneumonectomies, lobectomies and wedge resections. 

 

Anaesthetics and PACU

Operating Services at University Geelong Main theatre offers a round-the-clock service with ten operating theatres. Beyond elective surgeries, the department handles semi-urgent and emergency procedures. Specialities encompass Cardiothoracic, ENT, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Oral Faciomaxillary, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Vascular and Robotic Surgery.
