About the Facility – Department of Anaesthesia

The Department of Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, currently employs approximately 70 Anaesthetic Consultants and 24 Anaesthetic Registrars. We support 17 operating theatres as well as a number of ‘off the floor’ locations.

A wide range of Clinical Anaesthetic services are provided including: Regional Anaesthesia and Ultrasound, Obstetric and Paediatric Services, Cardiac Anaesthesia (including Transoesophageal Echocardiography) and a benchmark perioperative service (including CPET). The department has a strong commitment to excellence in clinical, education and research activities and a strong focus on preparing senior trainees for consultant practice.

 

About the role

The role of Anaesthetics Advanced Trainee/Provisional Fellow 2026 is to provide high quality anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain management of patients within the surgical and critical care directorate. 

 

Key responsibilities

  • Pre-assessment and optimisation of patients prior to planned anaesthesia is performed by all registrars
  • Epidural anaesthesia for labour, after completion of epidural accreditation
  • Airway management outside the operating theatre after 2 years of anaesthesia training, except in time critical emergencies
  • Contribute to and assist the supervising anaesthetist in the running of the operating theatre and off the floor anaesthetising locations. The fellow will eventually take the role of the supervising anaesthetist position with consultant back up support as needed
  • A range of roles are required including but not limited to general anaesthesia and sedation, airway management, pain medicine, perioperative medicine, regional and local anaesthesia, resuscitation, trauma and crisis management

  • This is a general position and available for six months commencing in August 2026.
  • Applicants must be ANZCA accredited or eligible.
