About the role
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow works within Barwon Health’s Cardiothoracic Unit, providing specialist cardiac and thoracic surgical care to the population of South Western Victoria. The role supports four Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons and offers extensive exposure to a broad range of complex surgical procedures in a collaborative, high-volume environment.
Surgery is conducted daily, with opportunities to assist and develop skills in coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, minimal access valve surgery, lung resections, robotic thoracic surgery and related procedures. The Fellow will participate in clinical meetings, patient consultation, and evaluation, and contribute to general reporting and unit activities.
The role requires participation in after-hours, on-call and recall rosters as required by the unit. Contracts of 12–24 months are available, with commencement from February 2027.
Key responsibilities
- Assist Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the delivery of cardiac and thoracic surgical care
- Participate in perioperative patient management, consultation and clinical decision-making
- Engage in daily operating theatre activities and multidisciplinary clinical meetings
- Contribute to general reporting and departmental responsibilities
- Participate in after-hours, on-call and recall rosters as required
What we’re looking for
- Registration with AHPRA (or eligibility for registration)
- Appropriate postgraduate surgical experience and demonstrated interest in cardiothoracic surgery
- Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
- Commitment to high-quality patient-centred care and ongoing professional development
