About the facility

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

The Neurosciences Department Barwon Health is one of the largest regional Neurology Centres in Australia. It is located at University Hospital Geelong and comprises of a dedicated ward, the Acute Neurosciences Unit (ANU), that receives acute stroke and neurology admissions and an extensive Ambulatory Neurology Department that provides: General Neurology and subspecialty clinics; a Neurophysiology service; an EEG 24 hr service for inpatients, outpatients and prolonged in home monitoring as well as a progressive neurology service that delivers a multidisciplinary care model, runs the National MND database (MindAus) and participates in MND research.

 

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for 1 x unaccredited non-core year Registrar role working alongside a dedicated neurosciences team.

Our Neurologists provide strong leadership, guidance and expertise in the management of acute stroke and neurology which includes the delivery of thrombolysis and decision making around clot retrieval with support from our stroke co-ordinator. Our ambulatory service consultants support a broad experience in general neurology with more specific opportunities in managing Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke/TIA, Movement Disorders, Vestibular disorders and Cognitive Neurology through subspecialty clinics.

Neuroradiology meetings, opportunity for EEG and EMG/NCS training as well as brain school are scheduled.  Each advanced trainee rotates through the three roles of: Stroke Registrar, Neurology Registrar and Ambulatory Registrar. The unaccredited registrar role rotates through the Stroke/Neurology and Ambulatory positions as required, assists in the acute service and consultative neurology service provided to UHG. On call and weekend call is shared between the entire neuro team including two BPTs who participate in the service with continuous consultant support.

Our team aims to consistently provide evidence base care, education and support to reduce the impact on people and their families with neurological conditions, working alongside experiences specialist nurses, researchers, allied health and clinical teams throughout the organisation.
