About the facility
Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.
About the Role
The Department of Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention is an academic tertiary referral program and incorporates:
- An expert infection prevention/control service across all Barwon Health sites.
- Infectious diseases services including consultations, inpatient care and antimicrobial stewardship to all acute care sites.
- Accredited advanced training in infectious diseases and microbiology.
- Specialized ambulatory and outpatient services for general infectious diseases, Hospital in the Home, HIV management, sexual and reproductive health, viral hepatitis and refugee health, with multidisciplinary models of care and paediatric input.
- Close onsite involvement With Barwon South West Public Health Unit
- An expert infection prevention/control service across all Barwon Health sites
- Psychiatry and pharmacy specialist liaison services and comprehensive community case management programs (HIV/HARP).
- 24-hour community HIV post exposure prophylaxis service.
- Extensive infectious diseases research programs in clinical, basic sciences, public health and epidemiology.
- The role requires participation in the roster for after-hours, on-call and recall as required by your unit
The department works closely with Deakin University, with many physicians and staff having teaching roles and academic appointments with the university. There are also close links with the Centre od Innovation in Infectious Diseases & Immunology research (CIIDIR), a collaborative, multidisciplinary research partnership between Deakin University, Barwon Health and the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL), and links with Alice Springs Hospital (registrars rotate to central Australia for six-month placements).
