2026 Geriatrics Registrar

  • 6 advanced trainee positions with up to 24 months of accredited advanced training.
  • Broad exposure to a range of core geriatric medicine rotations with opportunity to gain further experience in our comprehensive continence service, community geriatric medicine program and newly established Perioperative Medicine (POPS) clinic.
  • Opportunity to be involved in teaching of medical students through Deakin University Medical School and also for a leadership training via the subacute chief registrar role.

About the facility

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

 

The Department of Geriatric Medicine has expanded to include 15 geriatricians, and up to 8 registrar positions in the department (including 2 BPT registrars). Our services span extensively from University Hospital Geelong (UHG) consultative services including Orthogeriatric Service and UHG Consults service, residential in-reach program, geriatrician visiting program and Telehealth programs for supporting regional RACFs, McKellar Centre subacute programs with GEM and GEM@Home, Transition Care Program at Alan David Lodge, subacute specialist clinics including CDAMS, Continence Service, Falls and Balance clinic, Community Geriatrics Clinic, Perioperative Medicine (POPS) Clinic, Chronic Wound clinic and GEM CRC clinic.

We are a friendly and collegial bunch of geriatricians, with a strong focus on patient-centred care to ensure that personal, connected, safe, and effective care is delivered. We provide a supportive working environment for our junior and senior medical staff.

 

About the role

Barwon Health provides opportunities for a broad range of experience for geriatric medicine advanced trainees in a well-supported environment. Rotations include community (ACAS, Residential In-Reach, and domiciliary TCP program), inpatient GEM unit, GEM@home program, Orthogeriatrics Service, Acute Hospital Consults Service, residential TCP program and Specialist clinics (including CDAMS, Continence Service, Falls and Balance Clinic, Perioperative Medicine Clinic, Chronic Wound clinic and Geriatric Medicine CRC clinic). One of the key strengths of our training program is the opportunity to experience different aspects of community geriatric medicine service and significant exposure to a comprehensive Continence Service which previous trainees found it a very valuable addition to their training experiences.

 

Barwon Health also has a strong affiliation with the Deakin University Medical School. All trainees will have the opportunity to be involved in the teaching of final year medical students in their aged care rotation. In addition, we also have linked to several research groups within Barwon Health and Deakin University Faculty of Health. We provide access to research and statistical support within Barwon Health and through Deakin University. There is opportunity for trainees to conduct a research study in a well-supported environment to satisfy the college training requirement.

 

Barwon Health currently has 6 advanced trainee positions in Geriatric Medicine. We are accredited to provide 24 months of core training. We offer a variety of different rotations in Geriatric Medicine as described above. For a senior advanced trainee, opportunity is also available for interested trainee to apply for the Chief Registrar role which provides an opportunity for leadership training.

 

Barwon Health is participating in the PMCV Centralised Match for 2026 Geriatric Medicine Advanced Trainees in Victoria. Applicants need to apply to Barwon Health, and also, to register with the PMCV centralised matching system. In addition, Barwon Health also has established a regional training partnership (RTP) position with both Western Health and Melbourne Health. Interested applicant for the RTP training position will need to apply directly to us and Western Health or Melbourne Health outside of the PMCV match.
