About the facility

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

 

Geelong Cardiology Research Unit

The unit has been involved in the conduct of clinical trials since June 2000 and is recognised both nationally and internationally for conducting high quality clinical research and exceeding expected recruitment goals. On an ongoing basis, the unit participates in global Phase II – IV clinical trials in cardiovascular disease, as well as trials/quality projects conducted at the local level. Therapeutic areas of interest include ischaemic heart disease, ACS, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, rhythm disturbances, peripheral vascular disease and heart failure. 

Associate Professor John Amerena (Director of Cardiology Research) has been involved in clinical trials for more than 25 years, both in Australia and in the United States, and holds appointments as A/Professor (Clinical) Deakin University, and Senior Lecturer (Cardiology) at Monash University. A/Professor Amerena frequently performs the role of Australian National Co-ordinator for global clinical trials in cardiovascular disease and hold positions on International Steering Committees/Endpoint committees overseeing the conduct of various clinical trials.

 

About the role

Currently the Geelong Cardiology Research Unit is looking for a Part Time Research Medical Officer (43hours fortnight).

 

The successful applicant will primarily provide medical care to patients involved in the conduct of clinical trials. This includes being responsible for patient recruitment, informed consent, providing ongoing medical care, regular review and management of pathology results, education of patients, families and relevant staff, as well as data collection and management and also liaising with participants GPs.

 

Working as part of the dynamic cardiology research team you will report directly to Associate Professor John Amerena, Director of the Cardiology Research Unit.
